Down along the river is a cool place called St. Anthony Main. In an impeccably restored warehouse I found Ira Heilicher. Ira and Dick Shapiro were booking agents for "The Chancellors" and accompanied us on some wild road trips.Ira and I had a good chat about the band days and his projects at St. Anthony Main. He still uses live music to promote St. Anthony Main and the Riverfront.

Spectacle Lake Ballroom in the summer of 1964 was a magical time and place. Located on a back road between Princeton and Cambridge, Minnesota, small town kids from our area got our first taste of big city bands when the Accents, Avantis, High Spirits and CHANCELLORS came through. On one hot July night I found myself at the front of the packed dance floor, gazing up in wonder at the guitar player who would become a role model for my career. David Rivkin had a way of making his Fender Stratocaster cover a lot of sonic ground. His tonal experiments gave The Chancellors a leg up on all the other bands. And as far as I was concerned, it could have been all the other bands in the world, because right there, in that polka house turned rock palace, I was lifted from the constraints of small town life and catapulted into a thrilling universe like I had never known before. Seeing the Chancellors live at the lake crystallized my ambition to learn and play my guitar with a burning desire that has never abated. Ten years later, David Rivkin produced my first album, then went on to become the world-class and world-famous producer of Prince, Fine Young Cannibals, Bodeans, Lipps Inc and many other smash hit artists. I played my guitar on Bob Dylan's Blood On The Tracks a year after that and went on to a career representing songwriters rights and earnings.
This week, I moved my family's old oak table to a new lake home on the site of the old Spectacle Lake Ballroom. You can go home again.
